Charles sailed from Freusburg, Germany on the “Bremen” June 1st, 1879 and arrived in America on July 12, 1879. He went to St. John, Minnesota and attended Brothers' School to learn the American language. While there he worked in their bakery. It appears that he went to Norway, Iowa in 1883 and married Mary Veronica Walter a year later. They did not move to Nebraska until 1889. (Credit: Joe Preusser)
Impressions from Clarence Schmitt: “Charles was a pillar in the community of Petersburg, Nebraska. He owned a bank, was a trustee of the Church, and a friend of Father Treve (?). He was “hard to love.” When business issues came up at the dinner table he would tell his wife, Mary, “Don’t you have anything better to do?” dismissing her from the room. He always smoked Home Comfort tobacco and Grandma [Mary] would give the tobacco buckets to mom to be used for our lunch buckets. My dad, Ted, would dread going to visit Charles. Mom (Frances) would ask us to get a couple chickens to take to them without Ted knowing. Dad didn’t think we owed them anything. Charles never approved of Dad and Mom marrying. Tensions eased after Charles’ death.”

Charles and Mary, Frank, Minnie, and Anna left Iowa in a covered wagon for Nebraska in 1889. They crossed the Missouri River by Omaha and went on to Boone County, Nebraska. There they homesteaded on 80 acres of land, one mile south and a half mile west of Raeville, Nebraska. This is confirmed by the Plat Book of Boone County Nebraska; published in 1899 by the Northwest Publishing Company. It also listed 75.10 acres which was bounded on the west by the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad. The legal discription of the land is the East ½ of the Northwest ¼ of Section 18, Township 22, North Range 6 West of the 6th Principal Meridian. The two pieces of land touched on the northwest and southeast corners.

Impressions from Clarence Schmitt: “Officer in WWI. Henry came home after the war to Pro-German banners over the streets of Petersburg (due to many in the community being direct immigrants from Germany). He demanded they be torn down, expressing they were Americans now.
Around WWII Henry disappeared. He returned home a few years after his father’s death in a 1935 Buick. Uncle Charlie had a family reunion held in his honor. We were all impressed that the Buick had a radio and a large battery which allowed us to listen to the World Series between the Cardinals and the Yankees. Again, he vanished and we didn’t hear from him until Mom got word of his death around the time she was helping to raise the Vanourney children in the 60’s. He had sent my mother some money. It was reported that he worked for Lenox Furnace as a salesperson.”

Impressions from Clarence Schmitt: "Uncle Bill was a lot of fun. Every year on December 5th Aunt Anna and Uncle Arnold (Uncle Bill’s bachelor brother) would visit our home. Shortly after they sat down we would hear a knock on the door…it was always St. Nicholas! St. Nick would require us to recite our prayers before getting our fruit and hard candy. My sister, Helen, was the only one who did not have fun; she would throw up every time he visited. I remember one year when he lost the tip to his cane; I picked it up and said “Here, St. Nick,” after which he whacked my hand because he probably thought I was messing around with it. I did not like St. Nick for a couple of years. I can still remember the sting. Although this ritual happened year after year, we never suspected St. Nick to be my Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill loved to dance, and I remember he would always whistle while he danced."
