John and Peter Schmitt came to the USA from Prussia. They obtained citizenship in 1867 in Pennsylvania. They moved to Wisconsin in 1870 and St. Bernard, NE in June 1890.

Christina Olig came to America at the age of 12 years with her parents. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio where she lived for four years, then they moved to Johnsburgh, Wisconsin. Here she married Mathias Thome on May 29, 1850 in Culumet, Wisconsin. To this union were born three children. Mathias Thome died and was buried at Johnsburgh, Wisconsin. 
      Later, Christina was married to John Schmitt and to this union seven children were born. John and Christina moved to St. Bernard, NE in June 1880 and encountered the hardships of early settlers.
